The Jesus Plague

“…we have found this man a plague, a creator of dissension among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.” Acts 24:5

You have to wonder where we are in the timeline in light of all that’s happening, and what those stoking the fires of fear really fear.

The Trial

In Acts 24 we find Paul standing trial. He has narrowly escaped with his life from his accusers, the violent mob, the crooked Jewish high court and the band of hungry sworn assassins. He has been secreted off in the night by a detachment of Roman soldiers and taken to the palace of the regional governor, Felix.  Here he will, as is his right as a Roman citizen, be given a hearing to determine what and if the charges against him warrant his being prosecuted according to Roman law

Reading through the chapter of study this week, Acts 24, this verse jumped out at me.

No small wonder since our whole world has been focused on and turned upside down to varying degrees by just that, a plague. Or as we more sophisticated of the 21st century call it, a pandemic. Not just any old pandemic—a global pandemic.

Paul is called a ringleader of that plague, that plague spawned by those called the Nazarenes. Interesting that the New King James, my current translation of choice, uses the word plague here while other popular translations use the word pestilent, which means deadly, lethal or virulent. Either way it is bad news. Paul is being accused of spreading something which causes death. Strong words, carefully chosen by this high power lawyer to besmirch a man for simply worshipping his God the way he believes he should, through Jesus Christ, his Lord.

It would seem to us, in the 21st century, that the words used to label Paul no longer have the sting that they once did, because like so many of the words that our culture latches on to in order to whip up fury or to silence opposition, the words pandemic, or plague, no longer carry the weight they once did because, in reality, the flu that has been unimaginatively labeled COVID, is just not all that lethal. If you get it, there is a more than good chance that you will survive.

And nearly every year for the last couple of decades there has been something else that was going to kill us all. Swine flu, Bird flu, Killer Bees, Aids, West Nile, SARS, Monkey Pox, Zika virus, to name a few. None of them lived up to the hype, so many of us just stopped listening. Like the boy who cried wolf! You can only panic for no good reason so many times before you stop listening, and then when the wolf does come you end up being wolf chow.

Not so with things of the past that were labeled as plagues, pandemics or pestilences. It would conjure up images of sure death preceded by immense suffering leaving the survivors to carry on in a world where corpses outnumber those left to bury them. There was no room for debate or denial. You were either dead or those you loved were all dead, and you just wished you were.

Thank God for the treatments and vaccines we have. I’m old enough to remember the horrors of Polio and we all know the devastation that small pox created among the natives of the Americas.

Death Sect

So, with that notion of what plagues used to mean, Paul here, in the mindset of his day, is being maliciously accused of being the ringleader of a death sect that threatens to destroy civilization itself. That is truly what they are intent on conveying here with their accusations and their arguments as to why Paul must be destroyed and this pestilence wiped out completely. And the High Priest Ananias and his corrupt Sanhedrin are the ringleaders of the effort to stop the Jesus plague.

A little, but relevant aside here; our pandemic seems to have a ringleader or two also and boy are they making hay while the sun shines. I’ll be willing to bet 99% of you had never heard the name Fauci before. Now he is a household name, love him or hate him. He has his own bobble head dolls, action figures, socks. There are even Fauci prayer candles that picture him like he is some sort of patron saint to be worshipped—quite disturbing if you ask me.

I know the plague is real, I know people who have died and many people are still getting sick, but the politicization of it all, and the shameless and thinly vailed leverage of this largely survivable plague has done far more damage to the economy and the psyche of this nation, and the world, than the flu virus, that it is, could have ever done  if simple common sense and traditional rational had been used.

I think this flu is a little more stubborn and certainly more odious than most because it appears to have been manipulated by man via gain of function tweaking, and it appears that effective treatments are being suppressed. The evil of the manipulators behind this is unsurpassed.

This is one nature nor God can be blamed for. This one is all on us. But then, all sickness is on us because sin is what brought and brings sickness and death into God’s perfect creation.

But the Bible does speak of pestilences and famines to come as the end of God’s patience with man’s arrogance and depravity draws near and his wrath is poured out after all have had opportunity to accept or reject his gift of life. The same amazing gift of life that Pauls’ accusers call a plague.

Apocalypse

But just imagine what it’s going to look like when the real plagues, the one’s that really do kill everyone who gets them, when the bowls of God’s wrath are poured out and the four horsemen of the Apocalypse are released.

If you’ve read the book, you’ll know that things get real. And the plagues found in those bowls, and the weapons of the horsemen that will bring the evil and deceived of this earth to their knees begging for an end to their suffering, are many and horrible. And would seem to be much worse than what we see today. But you have to wonder where we are in the timeline in light of all that’s happening.

Perhaps we’ll get into Revelation next.

I’m not convinced this is not it, that it hasn’t already started. Could a truly deadly plague like the black death or small pox have wreaked any more havoc, cause any more dissension and chaos, created global shortages, shut down business for good, altered election results, closed churches—in many cases for good—created fear and panic in the hearts of billions, driven millions to drugs and even suicide?

Could a truly deadly plague have wreaked more havoc on our medical communities? Made dying people afraid to go in for treatment of their life threatening ailments? Forced a generation of kids to miss out on significant chunks of their education and stolen their identities and individualism with a piece of cloth while giving them nightmares of impending death by disease for them and all they love?

And it is far from over I’m afraid. I don’t really see how the plagues of revelation could ask for more than what we got out of this one. Yeah, this plague, this pandemic might not kill everyone it touches outright, far from it, but the resulting disruptions, unrest and chaos it has and continues to cause, may in the end kill many more than we dare to imagine at this point.

More likely, this pandemic was whipped up by the devil himself for the purpose of destroying our system and recreating it in a way that allows his puppets to come into power. The Beast, the man of lawlessness, the Antichrist, whatever you want to label his chosen man—or woman.

We are a fragile people living in a fragile system and any ripple, if allowed to, can build in waves of fear and panic bringing it all crashing down around us. We are all surrounded by what we think are wonderful people until they get hungry. Then your neighbors become a hungry mob trying to take your food.

And then along comes a hero to save the day. And we all worship the new savior and take his mark—whatever that will be it will add up to 666, and life will be good again.

We can buy and sell, be part of society, participate in schools and commerce and not fear the authorities who only have our best interests at heart. Just show your hand or scan your forehead and there will be no problems here.

Brothers and sisters, stay awake, stay alert and keep praying! If our Jesus was not powerful and able to deliver, they would not fear his name, and they do!

Whitewashed Fools

Know this–there is a battle happening on a higher plain and it makes all this chaos around us so very interesting. Be encouraged as you look to your own world and learn to recognize the hand of God as he makes the sophisticated and powerful of our own generation look like complete and total fools in their efforts to subvert his laws and his people. The mockers are becoming a mockery of the wisdom they claimed to have cornered the market on. Learn to engage on that higher plain. Pray that their plans backfire horribly, as the schemes of evil men usually do. Evil is stupid no matter the sophistication or the sharpness of the creases in their clothes. But unless we engage, evil people, no matter how foolish, will prevail.

Don’t shrink back, Jesus and his apostle Paul never backed down, neither should his church!

Yes, ultimately, the battle belongs to the Lord. But we have to be willing to engage, and we need leaders and prophets who are not afraid, who recognize the battles taking place. If those in the pulpits are not calling out evil, how will the prayer warriors, whose prayers affect and strengthen the heavenly warriors, know where to direct their prayers?

It is courage, boldness, prayer and the hand of the Lord that will turn this nation back from the course of destruction we are on, and that rallying cry I told you we needed last week must be heard coming from the pulpits of those God has called to feed his sheep and equip his saints.

A bunch of soldiers, no matter how dedicated, running around in different directions with no battle plan or leadership is not an army, it is at best a bunch of lone rangers who affect little. And at worse, it is a mob that eventually forgets who and why they are fighting. Let alone who for, who drops their weapons and runs for the caves in the hills.

We fight for the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, no weapon formed against us will prosper, no terror that comes by night nor arrow that flies by day will cause us to fear or run away defeated. You come to us with lies and deceit, or even sword, spear, and javelin, but we come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts whose name and whose armies you have defiled, and God will not be mocked.

Curses, Foiled Again!

And when it was day, some of the Jews banded together and bound themselves under an oath, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul. Now there were more than forty who had formed this conspiracy. Acts 23:12—13

Thus the *band of brothers, (band of boneheads more like) the most foolish, and soon to be the hungriest, band of brothers in Jerusalem was formed. I have always wondered what became of them, if they eventually broke their oaths and snuck off to eat some crow, or if they just starved to death. Because, spoiler alert, these idiots who no doubt thought they would be eating again in time for the brunch buffet at the Royal Fork, never did kill Paul. Curses! Foiled again!

Intrigue

The 23rd chapter of Acts https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts+23&version=NKJV reads like the outline of a good suspense novel. The diabolical plots, violence, political intrigue, conspiracies, disputes among religious power players, supernatural visitations, rescues in the night, armies on the move, secret spies and clandestine messengers—I mean, you couldn’t make up a better story. And that’s all in just one chapter here.

So what does it all mean? What does it all point to? All this plotting, scheming, drama and intrigue involving the most educated and politically connected people in the middle east at the time? All of it centered around one man, a disgraced Pharisee and teacher of some new sect of Judaism that primarily the downtrodden and ignorant were drawn to?

It means that the powerful and connected can scheme and plan all they want, the Lord still determines the outcome, he is still in control. And in this case he uses the schemes of evil men to destroy his Apostle to the gentiles, to accomplish his and Paul’s goal of preaching Jesus as Lord in the capital city itself—Rome.

And as Snidely Whiplash (From the old Bullwinkle cartoons) used to say whenever Dudley Do-Right would save Nell from his evil scheming, you can almost hear the enemy  proclaiming over and over in this story—“Curses, foiled again!”

Ol’ Snidely  was pretty hapless in his irrationally evil need to always being tying helpless women to railroad tracks, but then, after reading through this chapter, I hope you get a chance, it would seem the devil is pretty hapless also, at least when he comes up against the Lord and those who are following his plan.

Again, the verse that played so prominently in last week’s message as we talked about standing against the evil schemes of those who would bring this country and the church down, comes to mind:

No weapon formed against you shall prosper,
And every tongue which rises against you in judgment
You shall condemn.

Isaiah 54:17

We could call this the Snidely Whiplash verse-Curses foiled again!

Scene one

Setting the stage;

Paul has been brought up before a council made up of the religious big shots, the dreaded Sanhedrin, as he has come to face his accusers after being accused of desecrating the temple and subverting the law of Moses.

He has already gotten to preach Jesus to hundreds of Jews, thanks to an intervention by a detachment of Roman soldiers who rescued him from a murderous mob,

And now he gets to defend Jesus before Pharisees, Priests and Sadducees as the Romans, to whom Paul has appealed as a citizen of Rome, are trying to discover just what it is that has the Jews so riled up about this seemingly harmless Jew named Paul.

But Paul, he’s pretty feisty, he has a razor sharp wit and is not shy in any way shape or form.

And the high priest Ananias commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth. Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! For you sit to judge me according to the law, and do you command me to be struck contrary to the law?” Acts 23:2

I love this. Lest you think Paul a pushover, he gets smacked in the mouth by the bailiff and he calls the judge out for acting contrary to the law in ordering him struck just because he claimed to be guiltless before God. “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall!

Again, Paul stands up for his rights as a Jew, just as he has as a Roman.

When he is told that the one who ordered him struck, Ananias, is the High Priest, he humbly apologizes for dishonoring the office against the commands of God.

It seems unlikely that Paul would not know who the High Priest is but when confronted with the fact he perhaps realizes he may have crossed a line here, or he realized that cursing the judge was not going to help his case—that’s generally never a good idea.

It may be that Paul was so caught off guard by such lawless and unseemly behavior from the chief justice of this Jewish Supreme court that he forgets for a moment where he is. It seems, as we have so painfully learned in our own nation, that no matter the laws and principles binding an institution, even one charged with preserving and interpreting those laws and principles, that the integrity of any body or office is only as strong as the character of the people holding the position.

So, after apologizing for cursing the High Priest, and now understanding the room, he cleverly turns the hearing into a brawl between the council members themselves by playing them against one another. He does this by subtly highlighting their theological differences, pitting the Pharisees against the Sadducees and leaving the priests frustrated at losing control of the proceedings’ focus on demonizing Paul.

Swaningson bible memes

This court has no integrity whatsoever and this becomes evident when suddenly their own pride and the need to be right was the most important thing, and Paul was just a pawn to be used or destroyed, whichever suited their purpose and fit their narrative.

The dispute becomes so violent, one side arguing that Paul is right, that there is a resurrection thus maybe he is sent by an angel or a spirit, while the other, believing in neither, that they began to literally have a tug of war with Paul. And the Romans, fearing that they may tear him apart, forcibly take him away from the esteemed and holy council.

No doubt they were still screaming at each other long after Paul was removed ‘wait, where did Paul go?’ Curses, foiled again! What a sad testimony for a court that is supposed to represent God and dispense justice to God’s people. But we should not be surprised, this is the same court that determined that Jesus was a danger to society and who needed to be dragged out of the city and crucified.

Of course that plan backfired horribly, as the schemes of evil men usually do, and that is why Paul is now standing before them. But, evil is stupid no matter the sophistication or the sharpness of the creases in their clothes. And they soon lose all control of this situation, handed to them on a silver platter, as well.

Now the band of boneheads takes over where the Sanhedrin failed in their attempts to destroy Paul, the very annoying man who insists on talking about Jesus everywhere he goes. Remember who’s really wanting Paul done and gone, Satan, the same one who tried to destroy Jesus by inciting Judas and the religious leaders and then the Romans against him.

He must be so frustrated here as Paul keeps slipping away and foiling his efforts, always just as it seems like a sure thing.

The sad heartrending pleas from his friends not to go to Jerusalem failed. The angry mob of mostly peaceful protestors failed to kill him, (Acts 21) the Roman riot police failed to finish him off, the high court failed to charge or convict him. ‘I know, let’s get a bunch of thugs full of righteous indignation to ambush him!

Well, the thing about schemes inspired by higher demonic powers? They draw the attention of, and are easily foiled by, the highest power, the one who foiled and overcame the greatest evil scheme of all, murdering the Son of God, the Lord himself.

And Jesus is all over this.

Knowing this, that there is a battle happening on a higher plain here, is what makes this so interesting and encouraging as we look to our own world and learn to recognize the hand of God as he makes the sophisticated and powerful of our own generation look like complete and total fools in their efforts to subvert his laws and his people.

The mockers are becoming a mockery of the wisdom they claimed to have cornered the market on.

We face a defeated foe, he’s just too dumb to know it. And we have the Lord standing with us, let’s not be too dumb to see it.

Be of good cheer, and keep fighting the good fight!

*No disrespect or dishonor intended in any way to the Band of Brothers of 101st Airborne fame. You are true heroes.

Jesus Cancelled

All is as was prophesied long ago. And we are not deceived or blind to the truth.

Jesus suffered the injustice and acquiesced to their illegitimate authority for one reason, so that we could be free of any verdict that unjust and illegitimate courts of law and public opinion could endeavor to impose on us. He carried the shame of rejection so that we would not. But alas, he is being rejected still, he and all who follow–cancelled, or so they think.

Rejected

We are entering into a season in this nation where we are becoming, as believers in Christ and adherents of his word, fair game for persecution and censorship. The enemy has gained the highest platforms and controls the loudest voices and he is doing everything he can to cause society at large to despise and reject the message of the gospel and we who dare speak and live it.

I don’t need to give you examples. If you need them you are the problem. All of you who are awake can see and hear the outright insanity and blatant lies that are being propagated as true and proper behavior; the killing, enslavement and perversions of our most innocent and susceptible, the militarization and transformation of our once free republic, and the abolishment of the rights that have protected the church and all God fearing people for so long.

All is as was prophesied long ago. And we are not deceived or blind to the truth.

Evil is called good and good is called evil. And those who dare speak out or express concern are quickly dumped on, ostracized, threatened and destroyed.

This is more than an attack on our nation, more than an attack on our traditions and values, this is not politics as usual—this is an outright war on the church—on us as Christians. And unless we are bold enough, prayed up and anointed enough, loving and courageous enough, to turn the hearts of this nation back to God, this will only get worse—until we are done and gone.

The church, and then the blessed and free nation where all people could worship their God as they see fit, will  be no more. And we will just be a pawn in the enemies’ end time strategy to destroy the crown of God’s creation—mankind— and doom us all to eternal death, separated from our Father.

But, if we recognize and hold on to the knowledge, the hope and the truth of our place in Christ, to the fact that no matter how despised and rejected we may be by the shrill and intimidating voices coming at us from all sides, we are not despised, we are not rejected, by the only one that matters, our Father. Because we know and have not despised and rejected his Son and the grace and hope that he gives us.

And we have a secret weapon that the world cannot know for it neither sees him nor knows him but we know him for he is in us and is with us—the Spirit of power, the Holy Spirit of God.

When all seems hopeless and lost—God is just getting started. That’s when the miracles kick in. That’s when the Holy Spirit, which Peter did not have that dreadful night in the courtyard by the way, kicks in, rises up and says—yes, I know the Galilean, and I am with him and will always be with him. And I will not be weeping any bitter tears today.

Those days of powerless victimization and fear are gone. We are Spirit empowered and fearless warriors of Christ. And the enemy fears us. We will not be so easily cowed into silence or denial.

There is only one reason the enemy would be so determined and blatant in his attempts to silence us—because he fears the truth of God’s word in our mouths.

Time and again he has been defeated by God’s word. Even in what he thought would be his greatest triumph, destroying the very Son of God by deceiving his people into rejecting and despising him even to death, he was being defeated by the word of God, because he didn’t understand the prophecies that he was fulfilling in his blind hate fueled rage.

God used the hatred and evil that was unleashed by man’s disobedience and blindness to evil to achieve his ultimate purpose, to restore a real relationship with Him.

And I have to believe the same is happening today. So yeah, the enemy may think he is having his day, but it will be short lived, because our God lives. And his word never goes unfulfilled—never.

The more this world and the enemy tries to stop us, the more the words of the prophets are being fulfilled and setting us up for the final outpouring of His Spirit and the return of our King.

Satan is a fool and so are all those who do his bidding. He is only hastening his final demise.

We who love our God, love his word and welcome His Holy Spirit are never alone, never despised or forgotten by our God. And we will not, nor cannot, be cancelled!

God bless America!

The Enduring

We are all doing this now, what is wrong with you? How dare you question authority and collective wisdom.”

“For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things: that you abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality.” Acts 15:28—29

Do this

Those words from the book of Acts represent the final verdict that came out of the Jerusalem council, presided over by James as to what the Gentile believers in the Jewish Messiah should do to remain in good standing. This was the extent of the religious requirements placed on those who had confessed Jesus as Lord and turned away from their demonic false gods.

Simple, concise and easy. But these simple requirements made the former pagans stand out like sore thumbs—because everyone else was doing them and expected everyone to participate. If you refused you were seen as ignorant, judgmental, narrow minded and deemed a threat to society. We are all doing this now, what is wrong with you? How dare you question authority and collective wisdom—we have a consensus!

The same was happening in Jerusalem where the followers of Jesus no longer supported the temple worship and threatened the power and financial base of the priests and Pharisees. Things were getting ugly, you didn’t just buck the system—not the Roman system nor the Jewish religious system—without paying dearly. The church was forced into civil disobedience as they had to choose over and over again whether to listen to God or to man.

So this called for endurance, as they were often beaten, imprisoned or worse.

Proclaiming “Jesus is Lord and there is no other way to the Father but by him” was not okay. They were constantly swimming against the current, but this just served to make them stronger. When Jesus is all you have, you learn that Jesus is all you need. And then you are fearless and unstoppable. Even your death becomes a witness that cannot be stopped and a testimony that cannot be silenced.

Job

You have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord”

—Job’s patient endurance in the face of his misery, robbed of everything he loved by the devil himself, his health, his wealth, his children and his dignity live on as a testimony equal to none. But he refused to give in to the temptation to forsake his God and concede that maybe he was wrong about a loving and merciful God who seemed so far away in his pain. But he didn’t. He was counted among the enduring and was ultimately blessed beyond measure.

James is telling his church; ‘Don’t despair, don’t give in to the shrill voices of the deceived and ignorant who demand that you condone and accept their debauchery and corruption. Don’t succumb to their insistence that right is wrong and good is evil. Don’t sell your soul for the false peace promised to those who fall in line with the ever changing norms of a culture that has no set standard by which to measure good from evil aside from how the mob feels that day.’

Don’t set aside who you are to conform to who they demand you be. Be patient—be patient and endure.

Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. James 5

Establish your hearts, strengthen them, defend the hill on which you stand and watch and be ready for the coming of the Lord.

The more things change, the more things stay the same. James could have written his yesterday and it would all mean the same thing. God’s word is truly eternal and the enemies’ tricks are always the same.

Societal Pressure

All of this, this pressure on the early church to conform to the norms of a sick culture, should sound very familiar.

If you are trying to live by the basics of right and wrong, to honor God and his word, to abstain from the lewdness, rudeness and crudeness—from the drunkenness and the pervasive everybody must get stoned mindset that is being openly and aggressively promoted, then you will stand out like a sore thumb and you will be targeted and attacked as ignorant, judgmental, narrow minded—and deemed a threat to society.

And this is no longer just on a street level, this mindset is now pervading mayors offices, governors mansions, judge’s chambers and the halls of congress.

So this call to endure and persevere is no longer just an abstract concept that we have to manufacture perceived slights, and feign offense at whispered back biting, to relate to. It is now very real and it is being codified into law and popular culture.

I’m going to say this once, and I’m going to say it plainly. The only firewall we have right now between us and the spirit of the antichrist legally obliterating the church in America— is sitting in the Oval office.

Very few Christians know or care how many arrows our president has taken for the church and frankly, it is shameful that we are not more appreciative and supportive.

Is he perfect? No, he’s a Celtic barbarian from the mean streets of New York and he behaves as his blood and his upbringing dictate. But he is God’s chosen warrior, the one who stepped up, to buy his church time to repent and regroup. And we either have 5 months or four more years to do that. Trust me on that as a pastor who pays very close attention to all of this, and to what the Spirit is saying.

I don’t say this lightly because I know it will offend many people and probably cost me some readers. But, that is what happens when you speak honestly in the name of the Lord.

People who don’t cause offense don’t suffer and need no patience. But that is not us is it? If you’ve been following my blog for a while you’ve learned critical thinking, how to question everything and not to accept everything just because someone else said so. And you’ve learned not to be offended by truth or challenges to your spiritual status quo.

Barbarian

There’s no contented stagnant pools in my church because I’m always stirring the pot with my sword to keep it fresh. I told you, and them, long ago I’m just a barbarian with a bible and God keeps challenging me to keep that straight forward—fight the enemy in front of you—spirit, while living in total obedience to my king.

Barbarian prophetic preachers don’t draw big crowds or get invited to preach in big churches. But then Jesus only had a handful of people left in his group after three years, and they changed the world—forever.

We are the fruit of their sufferings and patient endurance and we are far from done. We will endure.

I referred earlier to the only firewall between us and the true church being outlawed as sitting in the White house.

There is another firewall, a spiritual firewall, that must be built up and reinforced because the Law is only as good as the people who adhere to or enforce it. The president can only buy us time. That time must be used to reclaim this country and this culture for Jesus.

That will take patient endurance yes. It will take boldness and may involve suffering, yes. It may involve civil disobedience as we are forced to choose between obeying God and obeying man, yes.

But none of that will have a lasting or meaningful impact unless we become people of prayer.

God had shut up the heavens when ancient Israel turned its back on him and it did not rain for 3 1/2 years. It took the fervent prayers of just one man, a man who was willing to stand in the gap between blessings and curses, right and wrong, God and idolatry, and pray for blessed rain.

He alone prayed because he alone heard God speak to him, Elijah, it’s time—pray for rain.

Elijah was just a man, one with a nature like ours, who had bad days, lots of bad days, and good days. Imagine if there had been an army of Elijahs? There is, we are they.

We are the people called by his name. We are the enduring.

For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

1 Peter 1:23

Teach Truth

Disclaimer up front here—at some point in this blog you may be offended, I may have even offended myself.

But seriously, if you have a preacher who never offends you, you need a new preacher. (I am a preacher by the way) And an offense is just a challenge taken the wrong way.

Teach Truth

Paul warned Timothy of this issue long ago, this ‘do not offend me because I’m voting with my feet’ issue that would overtake the church one day. And as the time goes by and we are racing towards the final showdown between good and evil, pastors, teachers and leaders are become more and more afraid of the people to whom they minister, and less and less afraid of the God whom they serve.

Most pastors today will trade a full church for a full gospel any day. “Just preach the feel good stuff pastor so I can invite all my friends and show them what a progressive and cutting edge church we have. Otherwise, I’m outa here.”— “Oh, and you had better have top notch entertainment also, you know, drama and professional musicians and stage effects.”

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth… 2 Timothy 4:3—4

I’m going to spend the next few weeks looking at Paul’s letters to Timothy, a young pastor. Because I think the church, has gotten to a place where people are not answering the call any more. Those who have not just flat fallen away from the church and the faith, as many have in this age as we see church numbers dwindle across the board, are just not answering the call, they are not stepping up and they are not desirous of truly living a life worthy of their call even if they did have an inkling to do so.

led astray.jpg

There is this weird paradigm happening where people can claim to be, and even truly be, madly in love with Jesus but not willing to live according to, or denying the truth and relevance of his word and his ways, they are in fact, unwittingly and in some cases, denying truth in favor of experience, emotion and cultural norms.

History shows that cultural norms are a dependable basis for determining God’s truth—no wait, that never works.

Right is wrong

I can hardly even keep up anymore as to what’s acceptable and what’s not in public discourse and cultural acceptance, not that I want to.

It would be downright comical—if it were not so frightening in its implications—watching the myriad of presidential candidates trip all over each other trying to outdo one another in embracing and doubling down on whatever absurd notion the other candidates happened to get attention with even if it is a total contradiction to what they claimed to believe and support just last week.

The spirit of delusion seems to have fallen on the whole lot of them as wrong becomes right and everything we have believed in becomes yesterday’s ignorance, as they all sit in their political and media circles and cheer each other on while the rest of us go,—’what? Who are you people, am I trapped in a bad episode of the Twilight Zone?  Or is this all just a bad dream’— no, it’s just the enemy playing with his puppets to destroy all that is good, the little that is left anyway.

I will speak

The point is—truth changes daily—you want to base your standing with the Lord on that? People don’t even know where to turn anymore, which statues we are tearing down this week, what heroes are no longer heroes, what history can no longer be taught or acknowledged; ‘Can I use a straw in my organic, sustainably grown coffee mixed with milk voluntarily given up by free range cows even if it’s offered to me by a transvestite barista? Or is this just a test to see if I really care about mother earth and all her multi gendered children?’

And that had all better be okay with you or you will have a milk shake thrown on you just before we beat you for being a hater.

What is acceptable, what is right, what is truth?

People are willing to go bonkers defending and promoting their political agendas and the latest scheme to save the planet from evil humanity but won’t give a moment’s thought to the one who created it all or bother to open the instruction manual he gave us, the Bible.

‘Maybe we can get truth from music?’ Yeah, that always works well. We went from drugs sex and rock and roll, to; I kissed a girl and I liked it, to whatever foul and perverse thing I can get to fall out of my mouth with something we call music behind it.

Thank goodness we have Christian radio—yeah, right. Let’s get our truth, our theology, from skinny jean wearing, young, rad worship leaders who got their theology from watching faded Levi wearing young cool worship leaders who got there theology from watching big haired, bell bottom wearing, key board banging worship leaders who got their theology from the young hip bearded bible study leader who showed up on campus one day with a Living Bible—“Cool man, finally a bible I can understand!”

You see where I’m going here? We need to keep grounded in truth. We cannot keep walking in ignorance. If you are going to endeavor to teach, or to be taught, you have to stay in, believe in, be submersed in, God’s word. You need to know the doctrine of grace and love found in the New Testament and the Law that preceded it and showed us the need for the grace in the first place.

sound doctrine

Because if all we are doing is presuming on grace and not caring a whit about how much of God’s law we are flaunting in our new found freedom, we are going to be in trouble, we are not carrying the torch that lights the way for all to see, the torch that keeps us from being swallowed by darkness as we await the sunrise of a new day in the Kingdom of our God.

Don’t get me wrong, there is some great Christian music out there, but that is what it is, music—an alternative to the garbage the world throws up. We cannot heed it as though it is gospel and every catchy tune with a clever chorus is not a word from God. The same goes for the beloved hymns. Even the oldest hymn was written many hundreds of years after the Bible was canonized and the word completed.

We can be inspired, blessed and encouraged by music from Christian artists, I certainly am, but we cannot stand on it. The only thing we can solidly stand on is the word of God.

We are entering a new season of the church, the great falling away is coming to an end and those who are still standing are being called back to holiness and will see the power and grace of God move in and through them like they never imagined possible.

Be that warrior, you are God’s chosen.
